List of 'U-boat Crew Casualties'

I believe that few more incidents/deaths should be added to the current list of u-boat crew casualties on uboat.net? (http://uboat.net/men/men_lost.htm) Most of them, if not all, can also be found on Historisches Marinearchiv (Crew lists WW2) - if anyone would like to check.

As far as the names in these radio messages are concerned, not all of them are (entirely) correct and I did leave out some of the details from messages, which weren't related to these accidents, so if you'd rather see the original ZTPGs, let me know.

Missing from your list are the following incidents:

U-249 (3.10.1944) --> 'Able seaman Albrecht washed overboard at 1410 and picked up again. Was given artificial respiration. Death established by surgeon lieut. cdr. of the ship Oberhausen.'

U-78 (14.3.1945) --> 'Situation report: artillery bombardment. Stoker P.O. 2nd class Alfred Texel* (U-78) has died of wounds.'

*Alfred Tebel (according to Historisches Marinearchiv)

U-237 (19./20.10.1944) --> 'Warrant engineer Volkmann overboard. Am making attampts to rescue him.'
And the message made 8 hours later: 'Warrant engineer Volkmann has not been found. Am breaking off search.'

U-265 (28.6.1942) --> '1 stoker P.O. 1st class, 2 ordinary stokers drowned while bathing. Can we remain in Swinemünde till search for them is completed?'

Historisches Marinearchiv gives their names as:
-Engelkes, Hinrich
-Olbrich, Helmut-Fritz-Wolfgang
-Schönbeck, Fredy

U-404 (3.9.1941) --> 'Leading seaman Skau washed overboard off Arkona. Fruitless search lasting two hours until darkness set in.'

U-481 (12.12.1944) --> 'In salvaging rubber boat, 3 men lost.'

Groth (U-958) reported: 'Have taken over apprentice artificer Meissner from Aust and midshipman Jähners from Andersen. Out of 4 men overboard from Andersen picked up able seaman 2nd class Setzwein at 1707.'

The names of the men, who were lost, as they can be found on Historisches Marinearchiv are:
-Fallert, Josef
-Lenz, Johannes
-Pulkner, Felix

U-595 (1.6.1942) --> 'At 1523 a man fell overboard and drowned. Position 5433.7 north 1901.5 east.'

That was apparently Günther Hoppe (again, according to Historisches Marinearchiv).

U-629 (15.10.1942) --> 'Lieutenant (E) Helmholz and ordinary stoker Köhl washed overboard at 1037. Search so far fruitless.'

'Broke off search at 1248. Scene of accident square AO 9469, left bottom.'

U-767 (22.12.1943) --> 'U-767 will arrive Hela about 1900. One man was overboard for 30 minutes and is not so far showing any signs of life. Request doctor.'

U-959 (12.8.1943) --> 'At 1602 in square AO 9433 ordinary seaman Toifl of U 959 (Weiz) washed overboard during aircraft exercise. 4 hour search with Isar and 6 u-boats unsuccessful. He was wearing life-jacket.'

Missing from the list is also the attack on U-393 (by aircraft) on 4.5.1945 in which the commander Friedrich-Georg Herrle and 'Bootsmaat' Erich Schneider were killed.

Also, are you absolutely sure, that the attack on U-703 (Brünner) happened on 1.3.1944? Because there's a radio message from U-703 with time of origin 2350 on 6.3.1844, which says:

"At 1705 attacked in square AB 8798 by carrier-borne aircraft with rocket bombs. 2 dead, 1 seriously wounded (life in danger), 3 slightly wounded. Am steering for Westfjord."

And another with TOO 1832 7.3.1944, which says:

"Suppose 'Stella Polaris' is berthed at ore-pier, Narvik. Severly wounded man has died meanwhile. On account of repairs to diesel, shall not arrive until 0500."

Another thing that left me confused, was this:

A message from U-354 (Herbschleb) with TOO 1627 12.11.1942 said: "Midshipman Meyn washed overboard in square AE 1493 at 1800/11 in a sea of force 7 to 8 owing to breaking of safety belt."

This is the quote from uboat.net:
"U-354, 11 Nov 1942
U-354 lost a man overboard on 11 Nov. [Fähnrich zur See Horst Mayen]"

On ubootarchiv.de/ubootwiki this same man is listed as Meyn, Horst, and on Historisches Marinearchiv we find him as Meyen, Horst. Could someone please explain, which last name is the correct one? Meyn, Mayen or Meyen?

I didn't list any injuries here, because I'm not sure what your criteria for them was - but if it helps, I can provide few examples.

Best regards,

Marinka
