Has anybody found anything out about the questions raised here? I have the Rouse article in front of me and there are no citations. He does state that the U85 crewmembers were wearing civilian clothes and had US currency and identification. This does not make sense. Two months later for Operation Pastorius the German saboteur crews went ashore in German uniforms incase they were captured to not be shot as spies. They changed clothes on the beach. Later German operations followed the same M.O. While Rouse is a well known historian I am of the thought that without a citation for this statement, and no other supporting documentation, it may just be fantasy. If anybody can prove otherwise I would be happy to hear about it.
