Hi All,

This is simply another myth, probably just poor reporting (using rumors etc.) or a writer embellishing his story etc. It could also just be a misunderstanding as some civilian clothes were authorized aboard U-boats. I have seen dozens of photos showing U-boat crewmen at sea wearing civilian shirts & hats aboard U-boats. The shirts were frequently plaid though not always.

Additionally, “District Intelligence Office, Firth Naval District report on Sinking of German Submarine U-85, disposition of bodies and effects, report on” at: [www.uboatarchive.net] contains the following on Page 37:

“8. A description of what appeared to be regular German submarine clothing issue is set out herewith and made a part of this report:”

At any rate, there were no spies aboard U-85. This is just another myth committed to print by someone who didn’t do proper research or a scumbag that decided to spice up his article in order to get it published. Once in print it has been picked up by others that didn’t do any research of their own either.

Also avoid Wikipedia like the plague when it comes to U-boat information as anyone can write & publish articles there and nobody checks the accuracy. What’s worse is that anybody can change the article after it is published and people with agendas do so all the time.
