On 24 December 1941 the destroyer USS DRAYTON (Cdr Laurence Allen Abercrombie) had left Pearl Harbor to escort the small inter-island steamer HUMUULA to Christmas Island (today known as Kiritimati) and claimed to have sunk a submarine about 60 miles south of Oahu a few hours after the departure. The commander was subsequently awarded the Navy Cross, the first of three awarded to him during the Second World War.
However, I could not find any details about this engagement. The Japanese Navy had stationed many submarines around Hawaii in support of the air attack on Pearl Harbor, but as far as I know only those of SubRon 2 were still operating in the area at the time of the depth charge attack of USS DRAYTON. No submarine was reported lost, probably someone in the forum of combinedfleet.com (saw you posted your enquiry there as well) will be able to identify the submarine in question, provided that one was present.
Best regards
