My hope is to almost play the roll of Naval intelligence and try to understand where riskiest routes / best hunting grounds are, or what seem to be the best strategies for attack/defense. There might also be interesting seasonal patterns, or dependence on the tonnage of vessels, their nationalities or type of escort.
Perhaps it's not feasible, but this site seems to have a good chunk of the data you would need to run some of those scenorios through. An even further off ambition might be to bring in any weather data there might be from the time.
