SS EMPIRE MALLARD sunk by U-Boat ?

<HTML>I\'m working through my Dad\'s records of the Merchant Navy ships he served on during the war, also before and after.
He\'s got the SS EMPIRE MALLARD as sunk, was it a U-Boat or Bomber that sunk her?
Can anybody help. I think this is the ship that went taking down with her his best friend Hedley. My Mam said that when the War started it was just a big joke to the boys (Dad and all his friends) but after Hedley was killed, he changed. Mam also said he never got over the death of Hedley or Jack.
Hedley was carried towards the prop that was still turning as they abandoned ship and killed. Jack was machine gunned by either a U-Boat or Aircraft as they sat in their Lifeboat, Dad was sitting next to Jack. I\'m still working on his records.
