RACER

Patrol Squadron 32 diary,

26 June 1942, aircraft 32-P-1 located RACER, schooner was directed to sheltered waters, a boarding party on board another suspect vessel LAGUNA was picked up and put on board RACER with an additional boarding party coming in another aircraft. The boarding party came from a detail of crew from USS GOLDSBOROUGH. The search turned up nothing suspicious, however one crew member, George Gough was removed from RACER and turned over to British security.

Some information on U-boat refuelling from "Hitler's man in Havana: Heinz Lüning and Nazi espionage in Latin America" by Thomas David Schoonover (University Press of Kentucky, 2008):

"Prior to the U-tankers, local refuelling and resupplying reportedly came from Axis sympathisers in the Caribbean. US officials suspected that German submarines had found local people who helped with refuelling out of ideological or financial reasons. The principal suspects were the Gough Brothers network in British Honduras (now Belize) and several suspected sites in eastern Columbia and Venezuela. George Gough, his two brothers and his son Alfred ran a local shipping service connecting Panama, the Central American coast to Belize, and Jamaica.

US surveillance planes noticed modestly sized vessels carrying numerous fuel barrels on their decks. Some of these boats were thought to be from the Gough inter-Caribbean shipping service.....British and US security authorities arrested George Gough, Alfred Gough and eighteen other suspects in July 1942. In April 1943, when the German U-boats had largely abandoned operations in the Caribbean, they were released for lack of evidence." (Page 87)
