According to Uboat.net three crew members of the Irish steamer were taken prisoner aboard U-46.

This account is at odds with the account given by The National Maritime Museum of Ireland at www.mariner.ie/luimneach which claims all 18 crew members got away in two lifeboats, one commanded by the Captain (E Jones) and the other by the First Officer (J McKelvey). The crew of McKelvey's boat were eventually landed in France and the three with British papers were taken prisoner. Two, (N Bartello from Malta and E Richards from Bristol) ended up at Marlag und Milag Nord. The third (McKelvey from Belfast) was allowed to reside in Paris due to his advanced age. A Dutch national H Madsen was allowed to travel to Antwerp.

Can anyone please clarify which account is correct?

It is worth noting that the Maltese seaman is referred to as "Bartolo" on uboat.net. His name was in fact Nasareno Bartello, as can be verified by UK National Archives, POW 90865.

Thank you,
Martin Quigley
