I think that a lot of the older generation of Germans were somewhat overawed by the nobility, as they were in England in earlier times. Its not every day that the average citizen is in the presence of a Lord or Lady nor a Großherzog or even a Freiherr. Some of the members of the Nazi party, in the higher echelons, probably thought they were the equal of the nobility but they did lack the breeding of such families
