Mediterranean surface operation

I'm curious, when a boat was operating on the surface in the Med or any warm climate, would any of the hatches (other than the Bridge hatch) have been open? I would think they would take the opportunity to get some fresh air into the boat, especially as stifling as the heat and humidity must have been in those regions.

Would they have opened the galley and/or the torpedo loading hatches? I would imagine it would have been less likely later in the war as aircraft became their biggest foe.

On a related note, where was the ladder for the galley hatch? I've never seen a picture of one. I assume it's stowed somewhere as it would be in the middle of the passageway when in place.
