Hi John,

After a quick scan of uboat.net I come up with the youngest former U-boat commander being Hans-Eckart Augustin born January 7, 1924 (& the only one born in 1924 not listed as having already passed away). If he is still alive today he would be 94. His only command was U-62 a school boat at the end of the war and he made no war patrols.

I came up with only 9 former U-boat commanders born in 1923 and not already listed as dead. If any of them are still alive they would be about 95 today.

Based on the above there is a chance that Reinhard Hardegen really is the last one left. Keep in mind that a big percentage of the young U-boat commanders that went out on their first war patrol at the end of the war didn’t come back.

What we need is for someone to come forward that knows that at least one of them is still alive.
