Dear TF,

A most interesting document you kindly put in the forum! Thank you.

There is one problem with this primary document: imho it wrongly attributes the attacking aircraft to the USAAF 296th Bomber Squadron (BS).

ONI's post mortem report is proabbly based on - while identical in many sections - to the US Navy's interrogation report of the survivors of U701 (see [www.uboatarchive.net], Chapter I, where the Sq is also identified as the 296th BS).

The same website brings in the section message log and analysis of Lt.Kane's attack (that is: primarily from the viewpoint of the attacker, the USAAF), references of the attacking aircraft which is said to belong to the USAAF 396th Bomber Squadron. [www.uboatarchive.net].

[www.dtic.mil], "U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II, Combat Chronology", also attributes the loss of U701 to an A-29 from the USAAF 396th Bomber Squadron (see page 32).

"World War II Combat Squadrons of the United States Air Force" (I have the 1992 edition, edited by Maurer Maurer) lists no 296th of any type ever having been part of the USAAF, but does list (page 486) a 396th BS flying A-29's during 1941-1942 and conducting anti-submarine patrols Dec.1941-Aug.1942.

As said, imho the ONI-report wrongly identifies the squadron number the A-29 responsable for the loss of U701 belonged to.

The ONI post mortem document remains an interesting read.

Best regards,
Walter
