<HTML>Re: Loss of Scorpion. She was inroute to Norfolk when lost and was presumed lost closer to Norfolk when she was lost. U.S. Navy had no real clue as to where to look. Her position was calculated (with very high accuracy, by a scientist named Craven (Check out the book, Blindman\'s Bluff for a very good account of both the loss and search for Scorpion) ) using math matical probabilities and some odd acoustic signals picked up by oceanagraphic sensors. Loss is thought have been due to a torpedo detonation. Theory is that one torpedo\'s battery over heated and initiated the explosion of the warhead. There had been a short curcuit/ overheating problem reported in the torpedos, but Scorpion\'s toprs had not been replaced prior to this cruise. tjk </HTML>
