Hi Walter: I first read a story in the defunct Saturday Evening Post from 1955. Seven year ago the subject was covered in "General Discussions" I asked if anyone knew how many tanks were on Fairport. I can look at my posts from then but perhaps due to my ineptness I cannot look at the responses. I recall one poster said that a C-2 class cargo ship could not have more than 40 tanks if they were only on deck. Most of internet articles I saw years ago are gone now but Eric Wiberg from Sweden has an article from 2013 that is still there along with Wikipedia.
The best source currently available is to go to "Sea Train Texas" the replacement ship on the internet. It carried from 250 to 300 replacement tanks and actually arrived in North Africa before the Fairport convoy. One article on Seatrain Texas says that 83 tanks were lost on the Fairport. johann
