3.- 26.1.1944
Western Mediterranean
Against the allied supply traffic from Gibraltar over the Algerian coast to Naples German U-boats are used. U 642, U 616 and U 380 are currently in use. several times unsuccessful convoys. On 3./4.1. from west U 952 and U 343 the Gibraltar road, U 343 (Oblt.z.S. Rahn) defends on 8.1. heavy air attacks with flak down, while shooting Wellington, R 'of the RAF Sq. 179 off and damaged Catalina, J 'of the RAF Sq. 202, but is also damaged itself. On 26.1. U 455 is sent through the Strait of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean Sea. - On 6.1. goes south of Naples in bad weather from the anchorage repelling US freighter William S. Rosecrans lost by mine hits. - On 10.1. KG.100 30 T-aircraft from southern France north of Oran from convoy KMS.37 sink the freighter Ocean Hunter (7178 BRT) and torpedo the Daniel Webster (7176 BRT), which, accompanied by the British frigate Barle, heads for Oran Towed and beached, but there is a total loss.
