Dear Wilko,

As we read U343's KTB the boat was bottomed in grid CH4998 from 0800 till 1915 on January 10, 1944.
This grif is centered around the geographical position 37°33'00"N, 000°54'00"W.
"Five mies north of Denia" would be a position in the grids CH5453/CH5461, not really the position U343 says she was in.

The KTB U343 mentions she did hear several detonations around 1750 (Jan 10th) which she considered to be aircraft bombs exploding in the distance.

U952 was another boat that might have been in the area, but KTB U952 says she was submerged from 0451 on the 10th (grid CH2759) till 0218 on the 11th (grid CH2855). There is no mention of surfacing briefly and submerging again for an approaching aircraft.

Do you happen to know to which squadron your father's Wellington belonged? A Wellington-aircraft from Sq.458 RAAF (pilot:F/O J.R. Markey) did attack a uboat cruising at conning tower depth with 6 depth charges on January 10, 1944, and near Denia at that (position listed is 38.56N 00.18E).
Problem is that that attack is documented to have taken place at 0621 and not in the afternoon....

Best regards,
Walter
