unknown submarine or uboat emblem. What is it?

Hello,
I have never posted anything in a forum before; so please excuse my mistakes, if I make any.

I recently purchased an emblem made of brass. It shows a dolphin looking to the left with a crown above. It looks very nice and I very much like it.
Once it was colored in red (crown and dolphin?) and blue surrounding the dolphin. The color left on the brass could have been enamel or some kind of lacquer. It seems quite old and the varnish is heavily worn.
It is quite heavy, weighing more than 1.2 kilogrammes.
Its diametre is about 13 cm and the height at the crown is 17 cm.

Actually, I have no real clue what this emblem was once used for. I think it is connected to the Italian Marine between 1920 and 1946 and it belongs to a submarine.
I would be very happy if you knew a little more about that piece.
