Hi,
New to this forum. I'm doing research on the U-870. This submarine made one war patrol in the November 1944-to-February 1945 timeframe. As you might guess, Allied ships that U-870 encountered are well-documented and represented. My goal is to also represent U-870's activity as accurately and fully as I can, so my request for information is extensive. All of what I know about U-870 comes from Wikipedia, so while that's a start, I consider it not a good source to quote. What I'm looking for is:
A list of crew members (I know KrvtnKptn Ernst Hechler was the captain)
Copy of sailing orders
Deck logs or operating logs for the Nov 1944-to-Feb 1945 war patrol
What port she sailed from, and date
What port she returned to, and date
Details about what torpedoes she carried - what kind, what company made them, how many U-870 carried onboard, etc.
Details about the fate of U-870
Narrative descriptions of the captain, crew, submarine
Anecdotal information about the crew - did anyone write poetry, paint, play a musical instrument, knit or sew, etc.
U-870's area of operation
Refueling operations during the war patrol
Photos of the submarine, captain and/or crew
Image of U-870's shield/emblem/insignia, if she had one
I apologize for the long list, but it points to how little I know about U-870, and also how accurately I would like to depict her in any subsequent writings. Thank you very much for your time,
