A question about Das Boot

Well, I´ve got a question about Das Boot. The scene where the nazis watched the allied ship sinkin, and then fired the torpedo, wasn´t that a little bit wasting the torpedos. Or is the ship even sinkin? Correct me if I´m gone horrible wrong, because that happens quite often. And I´m not a submarine expert, my interest have just beginning to grow. And thanks for telling me about the other submarine movies. By the way, sorry my english, it ain´t maybe too good. Well, that´s all, thanks
