They had to sink the ship,\'cause other wise the could not claim it as their own \"kill\", (dammaged ships didn\'t count on the overall tonnage figures).
The guy on the tower who started to cry (I think he was called Ullmann in the movie), did so because of the fact that they could not help or save those poor seamen of the sinking tanker, sinking their ship is another thing and not be able to rescue the shipwrecked is another.
