There are a lot of cases, where ships were sunk with the use of the deck gun only, especially during the first stages of WWII, U-30 under Fritz-Julius Lemp, or U-552 under Erich Topp used it a lot, but usually during day time attacks for better visibility-watching the horizon for other vessels or airplanes and better aiming.
