<HTML>By 1941, the Allies were putting huge amounts of cork and/or barrels in ships\' holds to increase bouyancy - ships loaded with these could be a bitch to sink. This led U-boat Command to press on with the development of the Acoustic torpedo, which would break the back of a ship with just one missile - not the two or three that Contact pistol torpedoes required.</HTML>
