Movie "Below"

Recently watched the ghost movie "Below" which takes place on a US submarine off Europe during WWII. The movie is nothing special, but it did raise a question. In it, a German destroyer used hooks.

Were hooks used much in World War II? I have read that they were used some in the First World War. I also seem to remember the British using hooks early in World War II when they realized a Uboat may have settled on the bottom off the coast of the UK. If I remember right, they were successful in detecting the boat that way. As I understand it, hooks were used mainly to detect the sound of metal on metal....were they also designed to damage?

Thanks,
