This is the forum for Movie and Film discussions. Again, our topic is naval warfare in WWII for the most part.

<HTML>hi Terry
Fubar's right, the DC should have the peeing sequence and some footage before Thomsen's speech, so you may have a defective copy.
which part of the globe are you from? the mini series which runs at 5½ hrs is available in PAL with English subtitles, and costs about £45 (sterling) inc P&P for the UK. It's slightly cheaper without subtitles in the original german from Amazon.de
here is a quick resumé of some of the material extra to the DC which it contains:
Thomsen leaping out of his skin in the Bar Royal when the telephone rings, and a whole extra song performed by Monique. Thomsen and Der Alte discuss German U-boat losses and how badly the war is starting to go.
Lots more on Ulmann and his french girlfriend, who we get to see saying a tearful farewell. She is also seen by the Captain through binoculars waving them off from the warehouses the next morning;
Kriechbaum on the bridge showing a photo of his sons to Werner. "4 and a 5th on the way", he tells him
Johann coming onto the Bridge and shivering and spitting in disgust;
The Captain teasing Dufte for raising an aircraft Alarm which was probably in fact a seagull; He tips his cap down over his eyes, but isn't angry
Some of the Unteroffizier's lewd reminiscences and virtuoso flatulence, chiefly between Frenssen and Pilgrim; Hinrich having a nightmare
Ario tormenting the Bibelforscher (who is more clearly a self righteous little tick) at greater length,
The Captain talking confidentially to Johann about the Chief's concerns about their fuel reserves and expressing some of his misgivings about their role;
Captain doing the same in the Wardroom, regarding sinking perfectly good seaworthy ships, and makes the IWO peel off the calender with an epigram by Cicero they choose to see as a double entendre to embarass him with;
Ario spying on the IWO in disgust as he shaves in the head;
A radio broadcast on heavy casualties resulting from the Allied bombing in Germany in the city where the LI's wife lives, and the IWO revealing his fiance/bride (couldn't pick up which exactly) was killed in bombing two months previously;
The Captain reading his letters from his Nazi Ladyfriend and the Bootsmann making the ribald remarks about the skills with chalk nazi girls are taught at 'Brideschool' ;
More extended depth charging sequences;
Werner challenges the Captain about why they couldn't assist the tanker survivors, instead of just looking at each other around the table;
Frenssen speculating to Kriechbaum as to how they are able to obtain supplies in Neutral Spain, and being tartly informed it's none of their concern;
Captain expressing his unease about the setup and security at Vigo to Werner and the LI and opting to leave as soon as possible;
Longer spent on the approach to Gibraltar, and the repairs afterwards which make it even clearer just how crucial Johann's contribution is to saving them;
Hinrich spoonfeeding water to the semiconscious Kriechbaum who calls for his Mama;
Captain discussing with Hinrich whether to celebrate Christmas on board or wait until they return to La Rochelle;
Obviously there is lots of other stuff too, and some scenes in the films are longer. The 'oily rag' scene for eg - Ario makes a rude gesture as Werner leaves the Bugraum and even the Bootsmann grins.
This version also has a narration by Werner which I thought worked well, and links the different episodes very effectively.
They still nearly all get killed though :-(
