<HTML>Dear Io,
My mistake. U-Kater is the radio callsign for U-953 under command of Karl-Heinz Marbach. Marbachs wife called him "Katerchen" as nickname(I do not know why??!! but one can guess) The boats emblem shows also a "Kater" (cat) with a captains-hat.
As for the book, it was my opinion that that the film "made" the book (i.o.w. it than became a millionseller) ( published in 1973 if I'm correct). If not I stand corrected and apollogize for the omission. (I have/had no acces to ratings or numbers sold over the years from the publisher)
Kind regards
