<HTML>Hello Cate and All,
at least partly in Germany LGB is not necessarily accused of any unique “crime” but as a permanent “intended” negligent “lier” so to speak of in the sense that he as a popular figure when talking f.e. on tv and rightly so condemning Dönitz for his conduct of the u-boat-war after the Admiral became aware of the fact, the war is lost and in spite of this still sending thousands of young men in inferior weapon-systems to their sure deathbeds but does not inform the audience the LGB as a more or less devoted KBE wrote and thus propagandised the Nazi-cause when he worked in this kind of profession in the forties. It is not so much the point of blaming him what he did back then rather than the audience gets the feeling they are lied to because LGB hardly does talk about his duty as KBE and what he published at that time, see “Don’t count the Dead” by HADLEY.
No problem, the book Das Boot is great, I read it in one night when last time as officer on duty and a mayor family-crises arouse when my father, who knew LGB got the book for Christmas and was never seen again by his “gang” before the book was finished. If LGB intended to give a fair account of what happened on such a patrol before and after he indeed succeeded in so far as the actions in and around the boat in the Atlantic is concerned but squeezing all the “Nazis” only in the described personality of IWO simply doesn’t hack it. Why f.e. didn’t he portray in the Bar Royal a conservation between a staff – officer and let’s say two KBE about the circumstances and situation in Dec. 1941 etc.etc. just to give his readers an overall picture as to what was thought at this time in St. Nazaire by the active military and propaganda personnel?
One quick remark to ENGELMANN’s book. You will have noticed of course that higher judges in Düsseldorf joined the NSDAP immediately after Hitler took power so they not being left out for promotion, so what was his let’s say fictive nineteen year old son, a presumed future u-boat-skipper supposed to be thinking of his father at this time under these particular circumstances in Germany in 19933/34/53?
You all have a nice day
Sincerely Yours
