Didn't know you had lived in the Land of the Rising Sun!
BTW, I was not US military there (US contractor), so obviously no uniforms for me. But we sure were easy to spot!
Annox:
The reason the Japanese military is held in such low regard is because the Japanese public, quite correctly, lays the cause of the war, with all the tremedous suffering, loss, and destruction the Japanese suffered, and the humilation and hatred that it engendered, right at the feet of the war-mongering militarists that started it.
Unfortunately, they transfer this hatred and fear to today's peaceful, democratic self defense forces. I never met a Japanese civilian who felt that the modern Japanese military wasn't at best a waste of money, and at worst a dangerous threat in their midst. Most of the Japanese public feels that unarmed peace is the best way, though times are changing, and the military is gradually working its way back to 'normalcy' as WWII memories fade.
They do have some good people, and some top notch equipment. One surprise: Japan has the world's second largest defense budget, second only to the US.
