It's obvious that your Mum was right: they were so frightfully young, as you perceived about yourself, and this can also be observed in the Wochenschaus which have survived, especially when they behave like ordinary football fans.
As for the problem of Der Alte's tame PK-man, if you take a really good look at his service record, you will see that he seemed to have been assigned to this particular U-boat ace, following in Brest and Bergen as the war progressed. LGB, the real-life Werner, clung to HLW like a limpet most of the time. But this realisation about the youth of u-boat crews did not necessarily appear at the instance when it is uttered in the film.
Concerning 2004, let's hope it's better than 2003 for you.
