Petersen tells how he and his wife strolled around Munich deciding who would be dead at the end, and I think their choices were right: Johann WOULD have cracked up again, so it's best that he dies after redeeming himself; Ullman has to die because it's practically foreshadowed at the beginning; the Bibelforscher is a sad little loser; and it's just a nice "Oh NO!" that the Second Watch Officer dies. "Where is your jesting now?"
Cate, who hasn't posted here in a disturbingly long time, always agonizes over whether or not Kriechbaum's ambulance gets away in time. Like yourself, I believe that it does. And I'm glad Pilgrim makes it!
