<HTML>By 1945, virtually all U.S. boats other than some relics retained on training duty Stateside had radar. Whether it was working at any given time, of course, was a major variable. A very high percentage of patrol reports mention periods when the radar wasn't working.
Tommy Dykers was the technical advisor on the film. He later produced and hosted "The Silent Service" TV series, making his possibly the most recognizable submariner to the average American in the 1950s.
That said, technical advisors were often ignored in favor of dramatic effect. Not having radar late in the war falls into sort of a gray area, since even when a boat had it, they couldn't always count on it.
