Thank you very much for the information. Please also thank your submate for me. It is wonderful to locate historical information from someone who actually experienced it.

I found a few war patrol reports dated late 1944 by commanders from Archerfish and Icefish where they either "occaisonaly" used their SD radar, or were specifically were ordered NOT to employ SD radar.

I still think SD radar was likely used most of the time by most commanders to search for aircraft. I think movie makers often tend to neglect technical experts simply to make a movie appear more interesting.
