As JT pointed out, the SD 'omnidirectional air search' radar was not a very successfull item. It had poor range, gave no direction information, broke down a lot.....etc. There were also persistent rumors that SD emissions could be homed in on, and many commanders were reluctant to use it - sort of like the fear that the Germans had of their 'Biscay Cross' (Metox)radar detectors actually serving as emitting homing devices. The latter story was not true, and I belive the former fear of the SD was also unfounded. But, in both navies, fear of emission meant that device was often turned off.
Now, when the directional, surface SJ radar came on line, that was different world! (though it didn't help with aircraft)
But for most of WWII, a good team of sharp eyed lookouts was the best defense from Japanese aircraft. Fortunately, the Japanese never developed a strong ASW air arm, so aircraft were not the threat to US subs, radar equipped or not, that they were to U-boats.
