This is the forum for Movie and Film discussions. Again, our topic is naval warfare in WWII for the most part.

<HTML>Can I chuck my two-pennorth in here?
Translation is a problem. I've often sat there watching the film thinking that the men are shouting no end of things which there is no space to translate at the bottom of the screen, and consequently there must be no worse film to try and summon up interpretations for (though I must admit when things go wrong in whatever I'm doing I often come up with the Old Man's reply to the First Officer at the bottom off Gibraltar in the TV version - "...Plenty Of Base Plate Damage..."). As for the book, the trial of translating literature is well known and reading it I have no idea, and this applies to any monolingual speaker, just how much of Buchheim's vision survives the process. Does he really fall violently in love with every sunset he sees?</HTML>
