<HTML>It's something I might try but some of my past German teachers would be quite amused by it. For example in my junior-certificate examanations(taken three years before we finish school altogether)I managed to fail it completely!!!Did better in my final set of exams mind you,but swore I'd never use it again.Surprisingly though going through books about U-boats I have been able to pretty accurately guess the English translation. It's strange how skills you were sure were buried come back.
Another thing that occurred to me last night is that it's probably the only war film I've seen that doesn't portray the Germans as the pirates and barbarians that not only hollywood seems to enjoy, but also much of the Allied propaganda of the time.
I have found that professing an interest in German war technology perturbs some people, but trying to convince them that not all Germans were bloodthirsty savages is a great way to kill a conversation. However I'd dare them to read Das Boot or see the film and not have their beliefs challenged. It bears repeating that the Germans lost out very badly during the war, none more so than the U-Boat men.
So maybe it is time I got my hands on the German version and dust off my dictionary, I may even find new things to appreciate.
