<HTML>Feargal:
I have read both volumes of Clay Blair's "Hitler's U-Boat War" and found them well worth the read. They have impressive appendices that I have used on several occasions. Certainly there may be a bit of an American bias (I am Canadian) and both the RN and RCN may have received less attention but not to the point of being offensive whatsoever. I remember being very anxious for Mr. Blair's second volume to hit the book stores! If you are interested in writings that have less American bias then there are two recent releases from Canadian authors who have written about the Battle of the Atlantic from the perspective of the RCN:
1. NO HIGHER PURPOSE (2003) by Douglas, Sarty, and Whitby
ISBN 1-55125-061-6 664 pages
Official history of the RCN (Volume II, Part 1)
Published by Vanwell
2. BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC (2003) by Marc Milner
ISBN 1-55068-125-7
Reinterpretation of the Battle of the Atlantic
Published by Vanwell
I hope this has been of some assistance Feargal. There are obviously so many other excellent books on the Battle of the Atlantic by German and British authors who I haven't mentioned here. Back to your initial question...I do believe that Clay Blair's books are valuable in that they provide tremendous detail on U-Boat operations throughout the war. They do not come across as a popular read as DAS BOOT, OPERATION DRUMBEAT and IRON COFFINS do...they provide detailed accounts of U-Boat operations.
Happy reading!
