<HTML>Yep, Hollywood magic and Hollywood science. Like the crew in Run Silent, Run Deep using a come-along to try to pull the forward torpedo room hatch closed, since the counterbalance springs were obviously so much stronger than the water pressure pushing down on it. (Probably shouldn't even ask just who had it open at sea in the first place.)

My personal favorite has always been the stock footage inspired magically morphing submarine that dives as a covered-wagon Gato and surfaces following a severe depth charging as a Balao, and mounting a 5"/25 in 1942, yet looks exactly like a U-boat, complete with net-cutter, in the underwater shots. (But John Wayne did get his ex-wife back, and I guess that's all that matters.)
