Hi,
The real Kapitänleutnant was Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, and the war correspondent was Lothar-Günther Buchheim, author of the novels Das Boot, Die Festung, and Der Abschied, and of many non-fiction works about the U-Bootwaffe as well as a whole slew of art books. The real LI was Friedrich Grade.
In real life, the boat wasn't bombed on its return to St. Nazaire (not La Rochelle)and many of those men survived the war, including the Captain, who lived to serve as an informal consultant on the making of the movie.
Regards,
Meg
