It looks as if no-one's answered this question yet, so I'll do my best though I may make many inadvertent errors: For a while everyone in the ? flotilla had the snorting bull of Scapa Flow on their conning tower, because of their hero, Günther Prien, who sneaked up to where the Royal navy was anchored at Scapa Flow and torpedoed the bejesus out of them (that's the technical term) in retaliation for the British making the Germans scuttle their own fleet at the end of WW I. The bull was Prien's emblem. The real U96 had the snorting bull on at least one side of her tower, though she may have had the laughing sawfish on the other (in the photographs all you ever see is the bull.) Later, because Lehmann-Willenbrock liked the sawfish and it was associated with him, all of the 9th (?) Flotilla had it as their emblem when he became Flotillenchef in Brest.
