Authentic in spirit?

Bearing in mind that it is, admittedly, an anti-war movie, how authentic would you say 'Das Boot' is in spirit? The impression I've always had from memoirs, contemporary accounts and so on is that members of the U-boat service regard their career with fondness. Yet it is hard to see - if the almost unremitting grimness of 'Das Boot' is accurate - how this could be.

Time softening the memories of the worst parts? A common feeling amongst all military personel, however bad their experiences? A distorted/more realistic view because Buchheim was an 'outsider'? Or did Peterson/Buchheim up the horror aspect to make their point?
