hi Barry,
Lovely to see you again; hope it won't be too long before you're back among us!
As for the spirit of the book and movie, apparently many U-Boot vets found it true to life. The movie is more problematic, as there was quite a bit of disagreement about how noisy the men were when under attack. Movies have to make money; they make money by playing to their perceived audiance; young men like to watch things blow up. Look what happened with the Lord of the Rings films--excellent as they are, still there's way more violence than in the books. Violence sells!
Not veing a veteran, I'll guess that the source of nostalgia is the memory of the intense comradeship aboard ship, but I bet that even the terror and the grotty living conditions tend to lose some of their sting over time, if the veterans I know are any judge.
