Dear Meg!
Maybe it sounds ridiculous, but when I read some of your numerous articles this morning, I just wanted to tell you, that I stand in awe of your passion of the u-boats and your fantastic enthusiasm to learn the german language. Espacially your conversation with Feargal Craven about "Das Boot" and "Die Festung" (01-20-04) made a great impression on me. Like you I appreciate LGB´s work very much and it was so great to see, how you defended him.
I know, that he isn`t very popular with many poeple, especially with german u-boat-veterans. Maybe because of the fact that he was one of the first people, if not the first, who showed who Doenitz really was (a man, who unscrupulously sacrificed thousands of young men, although the German defeat was inevitable) and unsparingly enlightened on the cruelty of the u-boat-war. Regarding this fact, it doesn´t bother me, that one can blame Buchheim for his arrogance, fictional storys etc. He will always be an admirable and estimable man for me.
I guess I´ve prattled on long enough for now so my apologies in advance.
Best regards, Jan
