Hello all,
We were discussing the new DVD version of the Das Boot miniseries a couple of weeks ago. Well, I've now received my copy, ordered from amazon.com, and the quality of both image and sound is outstanding. I'm hearing lines I never heard before, even with the Director's Cut DVD. Haven't yet had time to explore any "extras" because I just finished a very demanding semester of grad school and my daughter is getting married this weekend.
The subtitles are in American English and are true to what the characters actually say, amazingly enough. However, if you want to have a good laugh, play the dubbed-in-English version WITH THE SUBTITLES: for example, in the Bar Royale scene you'll hear Thomsen saying "I wanted to go out on the town, but now I am in no condition for that," while simultaneously reading "I wanted to screw my brains out, but now I am in no condition to f---!" (which, of course, he originally said in English anyway, and I'd love to have the opportunity to ask Buchheim why.)
So if, like me, all you've had so far is a blurry taped-off-the-air version with dubbed Sunday School dialogue or an equally blurry converted videotape with no subtitles, this is definitely worth the purchase.
Regards,
Meg
