Hello Dan,
You put your finger on the problem quite nicely: in war, there's no elegant way to die. Especially the Panzer-troops considered the U-boat commanders as some kind of wimps; a former member of a Panzerdivision who participated in the Russian campaign openly complained that the U-boat heroes got their Eichenlaubs and were then posted on land, as Flotillenchefs, whereas he and his kind got the medals and were sent right back to the front. When I read his righteous wrathful comment, I almost fell off my chair and blessed God for the continued peace in Europe.
