How could he be a young man, and the Captain of a U-Boat, if the war ended some 60 years ago?

Hollywood Magic?

I imagine it's just like getting the Ark of the Covenant and the horde of troopers aboard a U-Boat (Indiana Jones). Or six-guns that fire endlessly (spaghetti westerns).
