Re: Historical Accuracy of U-571

The only place in U-571 where any attention was paid to accuracy was in the construction of the sets. The boat itself is quite accurate, at least in the respect of being built from original German plans (but without the ability to actually dive).
As for the action in the movie, it's fine for the first two or three minutes. After that, it's a 1943 American "our side should win because the other guys are horrible, evil, subhuman bastards" war movie. Accuracy was never an issue, nor ever really attempted, either in the way the German (or American) crew behave, or in such things as underwater duels and German destroyers in the western Atlantic.
If you want a sub movie that's reasonably accurate, from the German side, unquestionably "Das Boot." From the American side, "Run Silent, Run Deep" is fairly good, bar some not-always obvious continuity and technical errors.
