How accurate were the crew depeicted in "DAS BOOT"

Im wondering how accurate the crew members in Das Boot were depicted. Das -Boot seems to be "Politically Correct" German style, and although still a good movie, I dont think the crew had the "spirit" of an elite U-boat team.They seem to appear more Italian on the whole, than German, and seem to be 'against' the only "Blond"-IE: German officer on the boat. Or were U-boat crews notoriously anti-authority types?

Has this aspect been observed at all?
