In the same book as I got that quote it details the war of words between Buchheim and Merten over the did they/did they not ever get poleaxed in the manner seen early in Das Boot - which, of course, only came to an end with Merten's death in '93.

I believe Merten is seen as a prime example of the 'Stahlhelm' brigade.
