One of the things that is often overlooked is that even the most horrible people are often very "ordinary" in their daily lives. This can be even more pronounced with psychopathic/sociopathic types, who either believe their actions are somehow justified, or simply don't recognize that what they are doing is wrong. One of the more common comments about serial killers, once they're identified, is from the neighbor saying, "I can't imagine it. He was such a regular guy. Never bothered anybody."
