After I complete the posting, I remembered that my father carried a small coin holder up through the 60s. There was a variety of small coin "purses" that men used.
This wasn't mentioned, but I think that a German accent in New York would not have raised an eyebrow during the war. I could hardly understand my Uncle Fred Heyda because of his heavy German accent. The joke in the family was - even the native speaking Germans had trouble understanding him.
