You may very well be right. I was only half joking when I suggested something possibly being lost in the translation.

When I (an American)think of soap operas it means melodrama, implausible storylines all capped off by a rousing game of musical beds. None of which apply to Das Boot. Perhaps the British meaning for this word is not so negative.

"Series" I can live with.

Which reminds me, I don't recall seeing 'Band of Brothers'. Perhaps because it wasn't released in theaters.
